Kelley M. Quirk

Clinical Assistant Professor

What I do

My passion is in teaching, training, supervising, and mentoring the next generations of psychologists. I teach Clinical Foundations, Theoretical Orientations, Practicum, Personality Assessment, and electives such as Couple Therapy, and Human Sexuality. I believe effective teaching is not only measured by questions answered, but by new questions generated by students. Beyond translating theory, tying research to content, and promoting skill development, it is important to inspire students to be curious and evaluate the origins and validity of ideas, including evaluating their own cultural worldviews. I see this process as fundamental, and the challenges therein are part of what makes being a professor such an exciting career.

Professional Biography

My training to become a clinical psychologist began with a Bachelors and Master's degree at Central Michigan University, followed by earning my PhD. at University of Louisville. From there, I gained additional training within my internship at the University of Utah Counseling Center. My specialization in couples therapy and family systems clinical work and research was solidified in my Postdoctoral Fellowship at Northwestern University's Family Institute. I greatly enjoyed a career focused on research and teaching in the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) programs at Northwestern University and within Colorado State University. My passion for a greater focus on student training, supervising, and teaching led me to my current home at DU in the PsyD department. At DU, I enjoy teaching a range of foundational classes and electives, as well as serving in the role as Practicum Director.

Outside of the University, I maintain a small private practice wherein I provide couple therapy, sex therapy, and LGBTQIA identity focused individual therapy. I also provide psychological assessments for court mandated treatment for adults and children involved in the Colorado Department of Human Services. Finally, my professional and personal passions have always led me to nature and meaning of life topics. I am fortunate enough to be able to do work within both domains as a mindfulness and yoga therapist for a young adult cancer survivor wilderness based organization a few times per year.
